Chris Morgan headed an injury-time equaliser to spare United's blushes in Tuesday's fixture with Cardiff City.

United's powerful skipper, who proudly carries that traditional Welsh name, rose to head home in the 92nd minute to prevent the Blades slipping to a third consecutive Championship loss.

In an action-packed game, leading scorer James Beattie added his eighth goal of the season to put the Blades ahead but Cardiff hit back with goals from Joe Ledley, Robbie Fowler - with his fourth penalty against United in less than 18 months - and Gavin Rae.

But Chris Armstrong began the fight-back with a strike on 85 minutes before Morgan completed the fight-back.

Robson made four changes for the visit of the Bluebirds with Alan Quinn, Bromby, Armstrong and Tonge being brought into the team. Hendrie started wide on the left, whilst top scorer Beattie, after drawing a blank on Saturday, changed his boots to a bright red pair.

Like on Saturday, United made a bright start but had to wait until the eighth minute before working the first chance. Kenny's long clearance was half-cleared to the edge of the box where Quinn was waiting to send back a controlled strike that was deflected wide.

United appealed for two penalties in one move when Quinn and Stead fell but the referee was not impressed and Cardiff's first chance was a 25-yard free-kick from Hasselbaink, which struck a well-placed wall.

On 17 minutes good work from Hendrie and Stead on the left saw Beattie hold up the ball and Quinn burst through before seeing his effort deflected wide again. However, from the corner United took the lead. Gillespie swung the ball in and BEATTIE rose above his marker at the front post to steer past Oakes.

Gillespie was back to defend moments later, his pace helping United out of trouble but he was soon hobbling out of the action with what looked like a hamstring problem. Carney was his replacement and Hendrie switched to the right.

Cardiff were clearly second best in the first half hour but they drew level following a fine move, started by McPhail. The visitors played out of defence with neat passes, worked their way down the left and after two United defenders challenged for the cross, the ball dropped for LEDLEY to smash home from the edge of the box.

On 37 minutes a Carney corner caused problems in the visiting defence, Morgan's challenge with Oakes saw the ball drop into a dangerous area but McNaughton cleared from under his own crossbar but their was more drama just before the half-time interval.

Following a corner from the left Morgan was adjudged to have caught Johnson as they went for the ball. Old penalty nemesis FOWLER stepped up and sent Kenny the wrong way.

United's players returned to the dressing room at half-time to applause from the home fans, the booing was reserved for the officials, as they were the last to exit the playing surface.

Within 90 seconds of the restart Cardiff were in the ascendancy and Hasselbaink let fly with a left-foot effort which was just wide, whilst the ball dropped off Bromby's chest and into the arms of Oakes following a Hendrie free-kick.

United were denied a third penalty on 50 minutes when Quinn, who looked to have gotten in front of McNaughton, hit the deck, but referee D'Urso continued to frustrate the home side and waved play on before failing to spot the most blatant of back-passes.

Beattie attempted an audacious lob, which dropped onto the roof of the net before Cardiff added a third, and this time the referee was not to blame. A hopeful ball down the right channel saw Morgan tangle with Hasselbaink and the ball fell nicely for RAE, who drilled across Kenny and into the bottom corner.

After Armstrong recovered following a challenge with McPhail, Robson used his remaining two substitutes, throwing on strikers Sharp and Shelton. The next United chance fell to the latter when his pace enabled him to latch onto a short back-pass but he slipped and the ball rolled out.

The substitutions gave United a lift and as the tempo rose so did the noise from the crowd but Cardiff weathered the storm and managed to slow the game down. They nearly added a fourth on 79 minutes but Kenny batted out an effort from Rae and then the goalkeeper was ideally placed to save a Fowler shot.

United, however, were given hope as the referee's watch ticked around to 85 minutes. Shelton laid off to the advancing ARMSTRONG, who beat Oakes with 20-yard well-executed drive before turning to the Kop, asking for them to turn up the heat on the visitors.

Bramall Lane was in full voice in the closing minutes and United asked for another penalty when Carney's effort hit Loovens, whilst Shelton's pace was giving the Cardiff defence a whole new set of problems.

Three minutes of added time was indicated - Blades fans thought there should have been more after a couple of lengthy stoppages - but there was sufficient time for the equaliser to arrive. In the second minute of injury-time, Carney delivered a corner from the right and MORGAN rose highest to beat Oakes with a perfectly-placed header.

There was still time for Bromby to land in another throw and referee D'Urso couldn't resist upsetting the Blades fans one last time when he blew the final whistle as United won a corner.
