A keen Sheffield runner has managed to go the distance in a monster treadmill challenge, winning a top sun-filled holiday to Malta.

Matthew O'Connor, aged 33, ran on the treadmill for 26 miles - travelling from the equivalent of Malta's airport and through the Island's major towns and back again - to win Sheffield United's Malta Tour Challenge.

Matthew, who trains around three times a week at GymPlus in Crookes, scooped a four night stay for two in the five star Phoenicia Hotel in Malta.

Paul Harmston, GymPlus fitness supervisor, said, "It's no surprise that Matt did so well at this challenge. He trains hard and is a valuable member of the gym.

"Even after a commute from his job in Wakefield, Matt is dedicated and disciplined enough to take part in his training session. Huge congratulations to him from everyone at GymPlus."

The Malta Tour Challenge, in conjunction with visitmalta.com, involved GymPlus members challenging themselves on various pieces of gym equipment at the Derek Dooley Community Centre, Crookes and the Copthorne Hotel, based at Bramall Lane.

Matthew, an eager runner, has also taken part in various charity events, one of which included the Neurocare Head Start 5k run in April, where he finished in second place.

Meanwhile, United showered fans with prizes at the recent Open Day at Bramall Lane.

Amongst the winners were Holly Beeby, who scooped a Junior Mascot package and Josh Cooper, Noah Flint, Sam Nuttall, who won various prizes by taking part in activities through the United Initiative, the club's community arm.

In the Strike The Bar crossbar challenge, William Cromack won a junior home shirt and Michael Booker won a seven night stay in Malta, with Club Malta.
