Speed thanks fans

Posted on: Mon 30 Aug 2010

Gary Speed's transition from coach to manager was given a boost by the Blades fans at the Preston game who gave him a great ovation, before and after the game:

"I never expected the welcome they gave me because I am not new and have spent a couple of years on the sidelines as coach.

"It was a bit overwhelming to be honest, especially when they applauded me at the end as well. They were really patient throughout the game which definitely helped because it gave the lads the confidence to keep trying to do the right things.

"All my background in the game under high-profile managers didn't really prepare me for the supporters' response, the experience and emotions I felt out there, but I want to give my staff and the players a big thank you because they have been right behind me.

"The players gave me 100% and I know they always will, whether we win or not, so if the fans and the players continue like this we can have a good season."
