Gary Speed has confirmed that he wants to strengthen his Blades squad and one of the new additions could be former triallist, Jean Calve.

French defender Calve, 26, played for United in the pre-season friendly at Notts County and it is thought that his club, AS Nancy, could make him available.

Speed said on Friday: "We are looking to strengthen in certain areas and we need to do so pretty quickly because the transfer window shuts next week.

"Jean is one of a few that we are looking at but there are one or two teething problems. The plan is to sign him on loan but we have to complete the paperwork before we can confirm the deal."

Speed adds: "If we sign anyone we have to make sure he is right and will fit in here. I'd like to bring in two or three to give the lads a hand, we've got a good group and ideally I'd like to bring in quality to help them."
