Gary Speed is close to finalising a deal to bring in his desired choice of first-team coach as he plots a way of getting a positive result at Middlesbrough.
The United chief says: "It is important to get another voice in, speaking to the lads because if I do all the talking they will eventually switch off. When I speak to them I want to know they are listening and understand what I want.
"The backroom staff that Kevin Blackwell had got in place are very good, so I am lucky in that respect, but bringing in a coach is something I want to sort out quickly."
Speed has also spoken about the reasons behind Sam Ellis remaining as his assistant, believing it could prove to be one of his shrewdest moves in his managerial career:
"Keeping Sam was totally my decision, because of his experience and knowledge of the game. I know him better than most and know exactly how he will help me.
"When I am up to my neck in it and can't see the wood for the trees, he will tell me what needs doing and he is the type who will speak his mind and not care about upsetting me.
"If he does upset me it will be for the right reasons and he is a vitally important member of staff behind the scenes."
Looking ahead to his first game in charge, which coincidentally will see him go up against two former team-mates in the shape of Gordon Strachan and Gary McAllister, United's boss admits it will be a proud day, but he has also considered the bigger picture:
"Going to Middlesbrough on Sunday is my biggest challenge at the moment and one I am looking forward to immensely.
"After that my long-term aim is to get this club back to where it belongs and then sustain that Premier League status because the infrastructure here is geared up for top-flight football."
