Extra time for fans to be in with a chant

Posted on: Fri 08 Jan 2010

As England gears up for the World Cup this summer, the Get On campaign has announced that it is extending this season's football chants competition to give England fans 'extra time' to get their entries in.

The chant competition, now running for its second season, was launched to tap into the nation's writing talents and show just how creative with language football fans can be. It is part of the Government's Get On campaign to encourage adults to recognise the ability that they have with words in their day-to-day life and inspire those who need to brush up on their English skills to do so and gain a qualification. Football fans now have until midnight on the 24th January 2010 to get their entries in.

Liverpool has the most entries from the Premier League Clubs followed by Manchester United. Aston Villa and Fulham are equal third. Watford is top of the table in the Championship, with Southampton and Burton Albion leading Leagues 1 and 2 respectively.

As World Cup fever grips the country, in this season's competition fans also have the option of entering a new, special category by writing a chant dedicated to England's World Cup bid. To impress the judges, the winning chant will need to reflect the supporter's passion for the game, as well as being original, creative and topical.

Judge Ian McMillan said: "Football chants are a great way to get behind your team and inspire a club to victory, so we're encouraging fans across the country to put their creativity to the test. We had some great entries last year, and we're hoping that this season's will raise the bar again."

To enter the 2009/10 competition, fans need to come up with a brand new chant, and enter it, along with the tune it should be sung to, via one of the following:
- online at the Get On website, www.direct.gov.uk/geton
- by uploading a recording of the chant to YouTube, and tagging 'Get On'
- by post to Get On Chant competition, 77 Kingsway, LONDON WC2B 6SR
