More than 50 local school kids have been honoured by Sheffield United's stars of the future, as part of a national initiative aimed at raising the aspirations of young people in the city.

Pupils from Manor Lodge Primary, St Wilfrid's Catholic School, Sharrow Primary and Arbourthorne Primary, have all been rewarded for their attendance at a special after school club, supported by the Blades' United Initiative.

The scheme, called 'Playing for Success', works with youngsters aged between 9-13 one evening a week for three hours throughout a school term , putting in extra work on subjects including Maths, English and IT.

Scholars from the Sheffield United Academy have got on the act this term, getting involved in a range of activities with the children including Maths activities and being interviewed.

And now, all the children who have taken part in the scheme have been rewarded with a special presentation at the club's Bramall Lane stadium.

Sue Beeley, head of community for the United Initiative, said: "Playing for Success is part of a national scheme which runs with other sports clubs across the country.

"The principle behind it might be simple, but the fact that we help improve the confidence and learning of these young people is absolutely magnificent. This initiative has shown just how successful it can be in improving pupil attainment.

India McKeller, the centre coordinator added "Having the academy players lending a hand has been a real bonus. They are great role models for the children and make work that little bit more enjoyable for everyone involved."

Certificates and prizes were presented by assistant manager Sam Ellis and Academy players, Kingsley Williams, Rio Ahmadi, Liam Wilkinson and Harry Maguire.
