Club Doctor's identity revealed

Posted on: Mon 21 Dec 2009

On Tuesday 8th December 2009, Sheffield United legend Tony Currie unveiled the new Mathews Practice name in front of patients and staff. The Mathews Practice was formerly called Belgrave and White Lane Medical Centres and celebrated its 125-year birthday on Tuesday. The practice was started in 1884 by Dr Robert Mathews and was kept in the family for the next 109 years, with his son and Sheffield United Club Doctor Bill Mathews succeeding him before grandson Dr Bob Mathews took over, retiring from the practice in 1993 and ending the family tradition. The current partnership decided to "rename the practice in recognition of this remarkable family of General Practitioners."

The event was attended by Dr Mathews' widow Julia and Mrs Patricia Smith, his sister. Speaking to the gathering on Tuesday, Mrs Smith recalled how patients used to shout into a voice pipe to get her Father out of bed when people needed medical attention during the night.

The new practice seems a far cry from those days with a modern theatre for minor surgery, highly-trained nurses, physiotherapists and a plethora of specialised staff. Dr Weir, the senior partner at the surgery, compared the practice to a football team with not just the doctors but all members of the team being needed in the same way that a modern football team needs more than just the players.

There was a real community feel to the opening, with patients, previous partners and current staff enjoying the food and drink, the sneak preview into the future of the practice and the unveiling of a commemorative plaque.
