Blades back local multicultural team

Posted on: Tue 10 Jun 2008

Sheffield United's commitment to the area around Bramall Lane has continued with the sponsorship of a local football team.

The Blades have given their support to Sharrow United, providing the team with home and away kits and the use of training facilities at United's academy in Shirecliffe.

In a continued effort to assist local teams within the community, Sheffield United will provide technical coaching from professional club staff, as well as offering six members of the squad the opportunity to progress to receive level one and level two coaching badges.

Sue Beeley, Head of Community at Sheffield United said: "We are thrilled to be involved in the local community in this way and helping local teams to reach their full potential.

"Sharrow United support the Blades in the local community by backing our ongoing community initiatives, which is particularly appreciated as many of the players are Sheffield United fans."

The team, which was formed eight years ago by staff and young volunteers at Football Unites, Racism Divides, represents the diverse communities in Sheffield with players from all over the world, including Kosovo, Bangladesh, Somalia, Zimbabwe, Iraq and Pakistan.

The team's most recent triumph was against Wadsley Bridge in the Meadowhall League Division One cup final at Bramall Lane where they powered their way to a 2-0 victory.
