A community project led by Sheffield United to engage local young people has expanded into the Westfield area of the city.
Richard Wright dropped into Westfield Sports Centre to support the latest social inclusion activities of the United Initiative, delivered by staff from the Blades' Kickz scheme and Activity Sheffield.
The 'com.unity sports project' promotes social inclusion in the Westfield area of the city as part of a new partnership between Sheffield United, Westfield Sports College, Sheffield International Venues (SIV), Shortbrook School and Sheffield City Council.
Young people taking part in com.unity are enjoying sessions in the multi use games areas and sports hall at the SIV-run Westfield Sports Centre on Thursday evenings - and United goalkeeper Wright joined them to kick off the weekly sessions.
The com.unity sports project is now looking to expand into other activities including encouraging volunteering.
com.unity project manager Patrick Meleady said: "We are absolutely delighted to have secured the services of Sheffield United Kickz as they offer so much more than just football.
"The United Initiative social inclusion team has a fantastic track record of delivering high quality activity sessions at times when children, young people and families most need them and local residents are thrilled that this is happening in the Westfield area."
The United Initiative is the community division of Sheffield United.
Head of community at Sheffield United Sue Beeley said: "It is vital that we work with local people - especially young citizens - to ensure we help create stronger and safer communities.
"We want to encourage young people to be responsible for what happens in their localities and the work we support in the Westfield area is all about that.''
Steve Culf, general manager of Westfield Sports Centre, said: "It was fantastic to welcome goalkeeper Richard Wright to Westfield for the launch of com.unity sports project and a great way to kick off the project.
"Westfield is a community venue and we are passionate about ensuring our first-class facilities are accessible to all which is why we are delighted to be teaming up with the hugely successful United Initiative to engage more youngsters in sport."
