Wolves 2-0 Academy - match report

Posted on: Mon 22 Mar 2010

Two late goals cruelly denied United's youngsters a deserved point against a strong Wolves outfit at Compton Park, in a game that they controlled for the first hour.

United were again made to pay for missed opportunities when the home scored two goals in five second half minutes, although the second goal was highly contentious.

In a blustery wind, the visitors started brightly playing some attractive passing football and after opening Wolves up down the left, Foster should have done better from inside the area.

Foster continued to look a handful to the hosts but again couldn't convert after another free flowing move by United. Chappell looked a constant threat down the left, but despite being in control, the Blades went into the break with nothing to show for their efforts.

The second-half started in similar fashion, with Roe, Wilkinson and Chappell all involved in a eight-pass move that ended with Foster seeing his drive excellently saved.

It appeared that there was only going to be one winner, until Wolves caught Untied on the counter attack in the 70th minute, with LANDELL beating Billard to put the home side one up.

Five minutes later the game was put beyond the Blades, although it was a strange goal to say the least. A Wolves player, who moments earlier had been off the field receiving treatment, was allowed to come back on the pitch with them on the attack, he freed KEMPTON, who slotted the ball home.

Coach Kevin Fogg was understandably upset with the result, after seeing his team after the majority of the possession:

"I am disappointed to lose a game that we have controlled for over an hour and although it is pleasing that we are having so much possession, we lack the cutting edge to put the chances away.

"We are looking to keep introducing the youngsters for the remainder of this season as the planning for next year is already starting to take shape. We look forward to going to Everton on Saturday and hopefully the lads will give a good account of themselves."

Blades: Billard, Brown, Roe, James, Darlow, Kennedy, Gregory (Pennycooke-Morgan 76), Murray, Foster, Wilkinson (Ahmadi 76), Chappell (Lammy 85).
Unused: Pomares, O'Kane.
