Derby County 1-3 Academy - match report
One of United's youngest ever U18s line-ups ran out worthy 3-1 victors against Derby County at Moor Farm on Saturday.
Coach Kevin Fogg was understandably delighted with the result and felt it went some way to rewarding everyone connected with the Academy for all their hard work in what has been a testing season:
"I would just like to put on record a big thank you to the players and staff for their commitment, and the win was deserved after a brilliant display.
"It must be one of the youngest teams we have ever put out and although I don't really want to single out, Darlow and Pomares were superb at the heart of the back-four.
"We are over the moon with this result and now we can look forward to our next game against Sheffield Wednesday."
England schoolboy international Callum McFadzean started his first game at Academy level this season and United had three shots in the opening ten minutes with Wilkinson, Ahmadi and Lammy all coming close.
The Blades had most of the play in the first period, with the hard-working Ahmadi and Troy Pennycooke-Morgan looking particularly threatening.
The visitors were looking strong at the back and took the lead in the 55th minute, AHMADI stooped to head home the loose ball after Pennycooke-Morgan had seen his effort hit the crossbar.
A great save from Andrew kept United's slender lead temporarily intact, although after they failed to clear a cross from the left the Rams levelled in the 65th minute.
Having already had a strong penalty appeal waved away, Lammy's lungbursting run was unfairly halted in the box, allowing WILLIAMS to confidently fire the ball home from twelve yards.
McFadzean and Pomares both produced excellent last-ditch tackles late on, before PENNYCOOKE-MORGAN rifled home an unstoppable third with virtually the last kick of the game to secure the Blades' second success of the season.
Blades: Andrew, O'Kane, McFadzean, Wilkinson, Darlow, Pomares, Lammy, Murray (Williams 50), Gregory, Ahmadi, Pennycooke-Morgan
