Academy 1-1 Manchester City - match report

Posted on: Mon 21 Sep 2009

United continued their impressive home record against some of the leading Academies in the country with a 1-1 draw against Manchester City at Shirecliffe on Saturday.

The Blades were dominant in the first-half and Roe's fantastic free-kick was the least they deserved going into half-time, only for Benali to rescue a point for City mid-way through the second period.

A positive start saw Maguire head over the bar from a Murray corner, before Foster saw his shot smartly saved by Johansen.

With United looking the team most likely to take the lead, ROE curled home a memorable free-kick from all of 35 yards that gave the Blades a deserved advantage at the break.

Foster and Slew were causing big problems for City's backline and that created an opportunity for Gregory, whilst at the other end United were defending well as a unit.

Pomares and O'Kane both had an impact on the game, but that couldn't stop City gaining the upper hand and they restored parity in the 65th minute through BENALI.

Billard then had to be at his best to deny Bunn and Elabdellaoui, before James just failed to get on the end of an excellently worked free-kick again involving Roe.

Coach Kevin Fogg was delighted with his troops after the game and thanked his staff for their efforts during what has been a testing start to the season, with many youngsters featuring regularly for the reserves.

Brian Kidd, United's former assistant boss, had some kind words for the Blades and their Academy and Fogg believes that is well deserved praise:

"The first-half performance was the best so far this season and that includes Arsenal. The second-half saw us defend resolutely and produce some excellent blocks and tackles.

"I feel I need to give a huge pat on the back to everyone involved, who have shown their commitment to the cause throughout the season to date.

"Brian's comments after the game are a massive confidence boost to both the players and staff, who have been absolutely terrific and we are now hoping this result can kick-start our campaign."
