Goalkeeper Stephen featured in a number of reserve games in the 2006-2007 campaign but excelled as United reached the quarter-finals of the FA Youth Cup - he starred in the shoot-out victories over Watford and Aston Villa.

He began his career in the local leagues of Doncaster before a short spell with Sheffield Wednesday.

He switched to the Blades Academy to begin his scholarship and signed his first professional deal in the summer of 2007.
