United ended the season with a narrow defeat at Crewe, but Academy Manager Nick Cox was encouraged by the performance of the Blades youngsters.
Despite enjoying the lion's share of possession in the first period, United came under increasing pressure after the break and despite the best efforts of Gareth Owen, Crewe made their efforts count.
Cox was keen to quickly switch his focus to next season and he is predicting at bright future for United's next crop at Shirecliffe.
He commented: "It was a much improved display, especially in the first-half.
"We pressed the ball high throughout, but ultimately the lads ran out of steam towards the end of the game and after conceding, Gareth (Owen) made a string of fine saves to keep us in the contest.
"Despite losing the last three matches of the season, we have laid some great foundations to build on next season.
"In effect, the team that finished the season will be the one that starts next season, it was a good mix of first-years and U16s."
