Sheffield-born Jonathan Forte has returned to the Lane, agreeing a loan deal from Southampton until the end of the season.
Forte becomes United's third capture of the January transfer window following the signings of Danny Higginbotham and Jamie Murphy earlier in the month.
Boss Danny Wilson commented: "People will be familiar with Jonathan's talents and we are delighted that he has accepted our offer to come and play.
"His goalscoring record is very good and hopefully he can improve that back in Sheffield with us - he is undoubtedly a player with great potential."
The 26-year-old made his breakthrough with the Blades, graduating through the Academy at Shirecliffe to make his debut in a FA Cup tie against Nottingham Forest in 2004.
He made 39 appearances for the Blades and after a number of loan spells he signed permanently for Scunthorpe United. He then followed Nigel Adkins to Southampton in January 2011 and has had further loans at Notts County, Preston North End and Crawley Town, who visit the Lane on Tuesday.
