Yeovil 0-1 Blades - report

A second half header from Neill Collins secured United's first away win of the campaign... and in the process maintained the unbeaten start.

United have kept three clean sheets in competitive fixtures against Yeovil and a solid defensive display paved the way for this win.

Collins, the stand in skipper in the absence of the suspended Michael Doyle, was a rock at the back and decided the fixture with a fine header from Paul Gallagher's corner.

Kitson was afforded his first start for the Blades, it was announced an hour before kick-off as the teamsheets were handed in. He took the place of Williams, who dropped to the bench, as boss Wilson made just one change following the 0-0 draw against Doncaster in midweek. The big striker's inclusion prompted Cresswell switching to left of midfield, with Gallagher on the right.

The opening five minutes were eventful. Goalkeeper Stech was forced to tip over an accurate free-kick by McMahon after good link up play between Kitson and Blackman, who then went down clutching his already-bandaged wrist after an off the ball incident and needed treatment.

United saw a lot of the ball in the opening 20 minutes, McDonald particularly, but the visitors struggled to make the final pass count from all areas. Yeovil, however, went close just before the half hour when Smith beat Maguire with ease and pulled back for Upson but the subsequent shot was straight at Howard.

As the half wore on the game's intensity did not drop and the Blades created a couple of opportunities. From a McMahon cross, Kitson, who was involved earlier in the move, headed wide, whilst Gallagher's corner beat Stech but Collins was off target with a header at the back post.

Just before the break both sides had further opportunities to open the scoring. For the Glovers, Smith ran onto a forward pass from Williams and beat Hill with a neat touch, but Howard made a fine save, diving to his left, the same cannot be said about home goalkeeper Stech. McMahon's float over the top of the defence found Gallagher, who produced a neat chip and although Stech retreated to make the save, he dropped the effort close to the line and was fortunate to see the ball stay out.

Stech, though, did make amends with two saves in injury-time at the end of first half, either side of Maguire receiving a booking for kicking the ball away. The home goalkeeper parried away McMahon's shot and then kicked away from Gallagher, both from the right side of the box.

Kicking towards the Blades fans in the second half, McAllister burst through the Yeovil defence early on but his run was halted by Stech, whilst at the other end, Collins was forced block, tackle and clear in the same move.

The stand-in skipper then made an even more telling contribution on 55 minutes. A Cresswell cross was blocked, giving United a corner, from which Gallagher delivered and COLLINS met with a bullet header, which comfortably beat Stech.
Within five minutes Yeovil hit back with Blizzard's cross-shot going close and a free-kick from home skipper McAllister flying wide. Wilson replaced the tiring Kitson with Porter, who almost picked out an unmarked Gallagher within seconds.

The Blades were being forced to soak up a spell of pressure and Howard repositioned quickly to gather a chip from Foley, before the action switched to the Yeovil half. Cresswell had a shot saved by Stech, who flapped at another left-wing cross soon after.

On 80 minutes, Williams was introduced for Gallagher, with Cresswell switching to the right, whilst United continued to keep the ball to prevent the visitors from attacking. A Hill cross saw Blackman mis-time a header, the Blades striker then had another chance to wrap the game up following a Porter flick on but he was denied by a poor first touch.

As the game approached injury-time, McMahon did well to deny Edwards getting on the end of Ayling's deep cross and a shot from Smith hit one of his own players. Four minutes of added time was announced and it was negotiated with ease as the Blades racked up another victory.
